The Letter A

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is about Hester who committed adultery and was sentenced to wear the letter A for the rest of her life. She is then forced to carry a secret about who the father of her child, Pearl. When a physician comes to town, he's carrying a few secrets about Hester. Secrets that might destroy a person whom the people care the most about, the towns beloved minister.

My favorite character was Hester because she was a single mother and who had to carry secrets about who the father is of her illegitimate child is and who the physician is. She is disrespected by all when she receives the scarlet letter and no one will try to be her friend. Her only companion is Pearl. By the end of the novel, Hester is a strong, independent women who is respected by the town.

What I disliked about the story was that it's a very old story, written over 165 years ago. Old story's are hard to understand because of the use of old language. Another thing was that it went from the characters name to what there job is, it was very confusing and hard to keep up with.

This was a good book to read for an assigned school reading. Although it was an old book it was very realistic as to what happened in the 1850's. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys older literature books.
